Abstract
As the globalization intensifies, increase in migration rates can evidently be observed around the world. Accordingly, competences that contribute to effective intercultural communication is referred to as Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC). ICC has been defined as a link between linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, and intercultural competence which contribute to the creation of an appropriate intercultural communication, and effective cultural assimilation. However, teachers tend to ignore the importance of teaching culture as a part of language study; they tend to know more about the target language than its linked cultural characteristics. Hence, this case study aimed to determine the role of communicative competence in the development of intercultural competence through the lived experiences of successful overseas teachers. In the process, interview method was used by the researcher to gather data. Results shown that four of the participants are conscious competent and one is unconscious competent. Moreover, communicative competence has a significant influence to the development of intercultural competence. Furthermore, the challenges and problems encountered by the overseas Filipino teachers during their cultural assimilation were: language difference, different work culture, physical setting, and cultural difference. Based on the results drawn, the research developed teaching approaches that integrate ICC in the foreign language teaching.
