Abstract
With the new MATATAG Curriculum of 2023 in the Philippines, the Department of Education emphasizes the role of Social Studies or Araling Panlipunan (AP) in developing critical, reflective, productive, and responsible members of society with sufficient civic competence. Therefore, the challenge of tailoring the subject to learners’ needs becomes more relevant than ever. In addressing the lapses of AP from the previous curriculum, the goal of teachers is to make the subject more relatable to learners by making it more fun and engaging without sacrificing the goal of developing critical and reflective thinkers with socio-civic consciousness and regard for the country. This paper explores the Netflix animated series Arcane as a pedagogical film for producing the socio-civic consciousness of learners in Basic Education. The researcher employed documentary analysis to gather necessary information from the film series. Meanwhile, discourse analysis was used to examine the content from the source material. Findings show that the social context in Arcane is parallel to the Philippine sociopolitical context in terms of corruption, weak rule of law, state-sponsored violence, discrimination, and social resistance. The researcher proposed a sample lesson module for Grade 10 – Contemporary Issues and Social Challenges regarding human rights based on the study.
