Abstract
Asking effective questions has been considered to be one of the most important indicators of good teaching since questioning is an important instructional tool, and the ability to ask effective questions requires sophisticated pedagogical reasoning. Teachers can facilitate students’ higher-level thinking through effective questions. However, teachers’ utilization of effective and higher-level questions is usually limited in traditional settings. The paper aimed to assess the entry-level skills and knowledge of Grade 12 STEM students in mathematics in selected schools in Batangas City. The respondents were composed of 295 senior high school students, who take Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) from senior high school department in selected areas in Batangas City, such as University of Batangas Senior High Department, St. Bridget College SHS Department, and Alangilan Senior High School, was chosen using stratified random sampling. A modified questionnaire on Mathematical competence was utilized to gather the data, respectively. The information gathered by statistical methods will enable them to be relevant. A descriptive-correlational-comparative design was employed, which employed a survey questionnaire. The findings revealed that the respondents are approaching readiness in terms of their readiness and related activities. Moreover, the findings further showed that most of the respondents were in developing competency status regarding different categories under mathematical competencies, and there are some reason/s that the students experienced and encountered in terms of their difficulty. Furthermore, additional learning and activities were proposed to enhance the mathematics competency for Senior High School students.
