Abstract
Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) plays a crucial role in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and ensuring optimal patient care, with nurses serving as key agents in its implementation within healthcare systems. This cross-sectional study examined the knowledge and practices of AMS among 81 staff nurses from selected healthcare institutions in Batangas Province. Data were gathered using a self-structured questionnaire that assessed awareness of AMS principles, understanding of AMR, and adherence to AMS-related practices. Employing a descriptive correlational-quantitative research design and non-probability convenience sampling, the study revealed that while the majority of participants demonstrated awareness of AMR, significant knowledge gaps regarding AMS principles were evident. Moreover, inconsistencies in adherence to AMS practices were identified, particularly in relation to insufficient access to training, seminars, and infection control programs. These findings highlight the urgent need for healthcare institutions to implement targeted educational interventions and continuous professional development initiatives to address these gaps. Strengthening AMS knowledge and practices among nurses can foster a culture of stewardship, enhance patient safety, preserve the efficacy of antimicrobials, and contribute to mitigating the global challenge of AMR.
