Abstract
Nursing adherence to healthcare protocols is critical in ensuring the safety and well-being of patients undergoing hemodialysis, a life-sustaining treatment for individuals with kidney failure. Despite its importance, limited research exists on the factors influencing nurses’ adherence to hemodialysis care standards, particularly in the Philippine context. This study evaluates the adherence of hemodialysis nurses in selected dialysis centers in Batangas Province to infection control, medication administration, safety precautions, and the nursing process. Employing a mixed- method approach, 50 nurses were purposively sampled, and data were collected using structured questionnaires. Findings revealed that nurses demonstrated commendable levels of adherence and understanding across the four domains. However, there were gaps in knowledge regarding specific infection control mechanisms and the impact of training and seminars. Statistical analysis indicated no significant correlation between nurses’ demographic factors—age, sex, educational attainment, and length of experience— and their adherence to care standards. To address these gaps, an action plan was proposed, featuring the development of a pamphlet as a quick reference for hemodialysis nurses, supplemented by professional development opportunities with field experts. This study emphasizes the need for continuous education and training initiatives to enhance adherence to care standards, thereby improving patient outcomes and quality of life. Future research and institutional initiatives are recommended to further support adherence to patient care protocols in hemodialysis settings.
