Abstract
Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is a significant Hospital-Acquired Infection (HAI) affecting patients on mechanical ventilation, often leading to severe complications. ICU staff nurses are crucial in preventing these infections, with their knowledge and practices being pivotal in reducing VAP incidence. This study examines ICU nurses' knowledge and practices regarding VAP in selected healthcare institutions in Batangas Province, using a sample of 50 ICU nurses. The research aims to identify deviations from infection control protocols and assess the relationship between nurses' knowledge and demographic variables. The study evaluates the respondents' demographic profiles, their knowledge, and practices concerning HAIs, particularly VAP, and explores the correlation between these factors. A non-experimental, descriptive correlational design with a complete enumeration method was used, collecting data through self-constructed questionnaires on demographic profiles, knowledge, and practices. Statistical analysis revealed a significant correlation between nurses' profiles and their knowledge and practices regarding VAP. The findings suggest that demographic factors influence the occurrence of HAIs in VAP, helping ICU nurses assess the effectiveness of their knowledge and practices. The study contributes to understanding the factors contributing to VAP and proposes strategies to improve patient safety and care quality. Recommendations include enhancing ICU nurses' knowledge and practices through regular evaluations, integrating infection control into nursing education, offering comprehensive VAP education, and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. The study also advocates for ongoing professional development, specialized training, and further research into factors affecting nurses' understanding of VAP and the effectiveness of educational strategies.
