Abstract
Emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in enhancing nursing students' learning, ethical decision-making, and critical thinking, ultimately improving the quality of patient care. As students hone their clinical skills during internships, it becomes essential to assess their emotional intelligence and its influence on clinical proficiency. This study examines the emotional intelligence of nursing students and its impact on their clinical competencies within Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) domains. The research involved 49 fourth-year nursing students from the University of Batangas, using a non-probability sampling method, specifically complete enumeration and convenience samplingA self-designed questionnaire assessed clinical competencies, while the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test measured emotional intelligence. The findings demonstrate a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and clinical competencies. Patient-centered care is closely linked with the ability to perceive, manage, and utilize emotions. Teamwork and collaboration are connected to all facets of emotional intelligence, while safety is associated with managing both personal and others' emotions. Informatics also relates to perceiving and managing emotions. Students scored highest in utilizing emotions, with patient-centered care emerging as their strongest competency. These results suggest that students excel in managing and understanding emotions, particularly in the context of patient-centered care.
