Abstract
The Emergency Severity Index (ESI) is a five-level triage tool used to classify emergency department patients based on condition severity and needed resources. This study titled “The Application of the Emergency Severity Index Algorithm Among Emergency Department Nurses in Selected Healthcare Institutions in Batangas Province” examined how accurately and reliably ED nurses apply the ESI algorithm. A validated survey was given to 44 emergency nurses from six hospitals using a quantitative correlational design. Findings showed that the ESI was widely used and that nurses demonstrated high proficiency in acuity assessment, decision-point application, and triage judgment. Some gaps were identified in frequent reassessments and consistent use of all decision points. There was no significant relationship between demographic profiles and ESI implementation, which suggests that factors such as workload and organizational support may influence triage accuracy. The study recommends using a laminated pocket guide to reinforce best practices, and it encourages continuous education and regular ESI-focused training to improve emergency care outcomes.
