Abstract
Diarrheal diseases remain a major global health concern, particularly among children under five whose developing immune systems heighten their vulnerability to infections. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the respondents’ demographic profile and their Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WaSH) practices and challenges in preventing diarrheal diseases among rural children aged 1–4 in selected barangays of Batangas City. Utilizing a quantitative research design, surveys were distributed to 72 parents or guardians from Barangay Santa Clara, Malitam, and Wawa to assess the influence of drinking water safety, sanitation conditions, hygiene behaviors, and household challenges on diarrheal disease prevention, supported by correlational analysis to examine factors such as cultural beliefs, financial constraints, and access to sanitation. Results tested two null hypotheses: the absence of a significant relationship between respondent profiles and WaSH practices and challenges, and the absence of correlation between WaSH practices and challenges in preventing diarrheal diseases. Findings revealed that only WaSH awareness showed a significant relationship with household WaSH practices, while cultural beliefs and financial resources demonstrated no statistical impact.
Keywords
WaSH, diarrheal diseases, household practices, sanitation, hygiene, Batangas City, children aged 1–4.
