Abstract
This study aimed to assess the challenges encountered in the implementation of Electronic Health Records (EHR) and their impact on patient safety in selected healthcare institutions in Batangas City. A descriptive-quantitative research design was utilized, involving sixty-five healthcare professionals selected through a combination of simple random sampling and quota sampling from four hospitals: Batangas Healthcare Hospital Jesus of Nazareth, United Doctors of St. Camillus De Lellis Hospital and Medical Center, Saint Patrick’s Hospital Medical Center, and Batangas Healthcare Specialists Medical Center. Data were collected through a structured, self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using frequency distribution, weighted mean, and inferential statistics. Ethical approval was obtained from the College Research Ethics Committee, and research approval was sought from each institution’s hospital director, chief nurse, and human resource management. Results revealed that the challenge related to cost received an overall mean of 3.29, interpreted as agree. The challenge on lack of standardization had an overall mean of 3.30, also interpreted as agree. Meanwhile, the challenge on usability had the highest overall mean of 3.40, indicating a general agreement among respondents. Among the profile variables, work area showed a significant relationship with usability (p<0.05), while age, sex, education, and work experience showed no significant relationship across all challenges. The findings emphasized that usability, lack of standardization, and cost-related concerns were major factors affecting the effectiveness and safety of EHR implementation. These results suggest the need for improvements in system usability, consistent standards, and cost-efficiency to ensure better integration and safer healthcare delivery.
