Abstract
Sleep quality is one of the most overlooked aspects in a student’s academic years, especially among nursing students. The nursing profession is said to be one of the most challenging courses, due to the difficulties nursing students sacrifice their sleep quality. However, this method of sacrificing sleep quality is considered a factor that can affect the cognitive performance of nursing students. Having an optimum level of cognitive performance is vital because it can greatly benefit nursing students especially due to the demand of their course. This quantitative non experimental research investigates the significant association between the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and cognitive performance of one hundred eighty- six (186) nursing students from the University of Batangas. In order to measure the two variables’ researchers used standardized and self-structured questionnaires. Likert scale, standard deviation, simple percentage, chi square and Pearson correlation coefficient were also obtained. The results of the study revealed that based on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index the sleep quality of nursing students is poor. In addition, the sleep quality of students affects their cognitive performance in terms of Learning, Memory, and Understanding to a verbal scale of true of me. However, there is no significant comparison between sleep quality using Pittsburgh sleep quality index and the students’ cognitive performance level. Furthermore, in line with the results of the study, the researchers would like to propose an action plan to enhance the nursing students sleep quality for institution’s considerations.
