Abstract
Nurses are known for their flexibility and resilience in the face of challenging situations, however, extended shifts can often result in fatigue, burnout, and an elevated risk of errors and adverse events. With a shortage of nurses in the healthcare industry, this situation exacerbates, leading to increased workloads and fatigue which further elevates the possibility of malpractice and patient safety risks. This descriptive correlational research design and quantitative, non-experimental research approach assessed the 60 staff nurses in selected healthcare institutions in Batangas City to determine the effects of staff nurse shifts length and fatigue on patient safety. The researchers employed a standardized questionnaire and utilized both simple random sampling and convenience sampling methods. The results of the study revealed that majority of staff nurses are female, aged between 25 to 34 years old, working for 12-15 hours per shift, working for more than 5 to 7 days per week, and handling more than 20 patients per shift. Most of them are assigned to adult medical surgical in-patient units. The fatigue severity perceived by staff nurses is primarily related to energy, with an overall result of low fatigue. Additionally, the extent of fatigue experienced by staff nurses due to shift length was moderate extent. Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between staff nurses' fatigue and their performance on patient safety, but no significant relationship between shift length, fatigue, and patient safety when considering different profile variables. Lastly, in line with the result of the study the researchers would like to propose an action plan to enhance staff nurses' coping skills in managing the effects of shift length and fatigue on patient safety.
