Abstract
As college students transition into adulthood, their ability to understand and handle money is essential to the development of their budgeting discipline, which in turn affects their spending patterns and general financial well-being. College students often struggle with controlling their spending which can undermine overall financial discipline. In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), this research analyzes the spending patterns and budget discipline of University of Batangas college students. The data gathered will be used to guide the development of "Budge-It, " a novel budgeting application. The application is designed to offer AI-driven financial tools that assist students in tracking expenses, setting financial goals, and maintaining budgeting discipline. The descriptive correlational design was employed, utilizing a stratified random sampling method to select 180 students from nine college departments at the University of Batangas. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, and statistical analyses were conducted using frequency distribution, percentage, ranking, weighted mean, composite mean, and Pearson correlation coefficient to examine spending habits, budget discipline, and saving techniques. Findings revealed that college students demonstrated varying levels of financial discipline, with female respondents exhibiting stronger budgeting discipline, particularly in educational consumption. While students demonstrated mindful spending habits, challenges in controlling impulsive purchases and adopting cost-saving practices persisted. The departments of Business, Accountancy, and Hospitality Management, Education, and Engineering students displayed better financial management skills, while ICT and Criminal Justice students showed weaker financial discipline. Thus, the proposed Budge-It app offers features like calendar tracker, expense and income tracker, and budget reminders to help students track expenses, prioritize needs, and enhance saving strategies. Implementing the mobile budgeting application aims to support financial literacy efforts, promoting improved budgeting discipline and long-term financial stability.
